Migrants vie for Jobs in Australia
Australia is enjoying a burgeoning economy. Yet, along with it comes a chronic skills shortage. Those with skills in computing, accounting and engineering coupled with good English communication skills have become Australia’s fastest growing group of migrants.
Australia’s biggest sources of migrants, because of their historical ties, are Great Britain and New Zealand. But recent figures show an increase in migrants coming from nearby Asia.
Migrants from India and China head the list. The Philippines has become the fifth biggest source of migrants followed by Malaysia and Singapore. The latest figures show that Australia is soaking up
migrants at both ends of the skills spectrum as Canberra competes with other developed countries like the US and Canada for global talent.
Most migrants from Britain, for example, were from higher-skilled jobs such as nurses, building and engineering professionals as well as managers. But a fair number were also blue-collar carpenters, electricians and hairdressers.
Their Asian counterparts meanwhile were mostly computing professionals, followed by sales and service people, accountant and engineers. Doctors and other health-care professionals are also making the move to Australia.
